As with every major tournament, especially the Six Nations, the world slips into a state of patriotic obsession, with this year’s European Championships encouraging exactly that. Bringing die-hard and new fans together the Euros 2016 is having an incredible impact on Welsh business, including technology!
During the last Six Nations we saw a 10% increase in .Wales and .Cymru domain name purchases, a trend that is being relived with Wales being in the European Championships.
One of the first organisations to purchase a Welsh domain name was the Football Association of Wales (FAW), putting the Welsh team’s on-pitch success as a catalyst for Welsh business innovation. Encouraging more publicity and a better sense of Welsh community It seems the world of sport can help get Wales on the map in many different ways.
“We jumped at the prospect of reinforcing our Welsh identity by using the new domains,” said Jonathan Ford, chief executive officer of the FAW.
“We want to take every opportunity to put the name of Cymru and Wales out there for the world to see.
“Qualifying for our first major tournament since 1958 has certainly given Wales a strong international profile and we hope individual fans will keep that going by registering for the .cymru and .wales domains and helping Wales to stick out from the crowd.”
Due to this new-found love for the specific domain name many are calling for entrepreneurs to get in their quickly.
Former Welsh rugby full-back Lee Byrne is also involved in spreading the world of Welsh domains:
“The fact that the FAW have a .Cymru domain is testament to how proud they are of our nation,” said Byrne.
“We followed suit with Adventure Camps Wales. I think more and more individuals and business will follow suit now too.”
