CELEBS WITH AN EYE FOR WEB DESIGN

MOBO Media

Design is an industry that welcomes the weird and the wonderful, known for enticing those with a creative flair. Where many think that the web design industry is filled with spec-wearing Star Wars geeks there are a few that break the mould.

Here are some well-known celebrities that you would not have thought dabbled in web design prior to finding fame.

Alan Rickman
Although Alan Rickman is best known for being Bruce Willis’ nemesis in Die Hard and Harry Potter’s dark arts teacher in Harry Potter he was once heavily involved in graphic design. As a graduate of Chelsea College of Art and Design Rickman went on to a postgraduate degree at the Royal College of Art, before throwing in his Macintosh and going to drama school.

However, in between schools he set up his own design agency called ‘Graphiti’.

They say if he were late for work he would not call the office but would simply Slytherin!

Ricky Wilson
Another Rick to test the waters of design was Ricky Wilson, frontman of the world famous band the Kaiser Chiefs. Although known for his indie-rock dance moves and alternative dress sense Ricky once resided in a more formal career path, being a graphic design lecturer at Leeds College of Art.

David Bowie
David Bowie arguably encompassed everything that was postmodern during his career as a performer, providing a visual and audio backdrop to the art movement. With everything he did revolving around his unique vision of the world it does not come as a great surprise that Bowie dabbled in design before becoming a musician.

Attending art school Bowie specialised in layout and typesetting, although he did not end up pursuing a career as a designer, it became his favoured hobby.

It was at Art College that a classmate punched Bowie, a scrap that gave him the permanently dilated pupil that makes Bowie seem so alien.

Freddie Mercury
Freddie of internationally celebrated band Queen was a graduate from Ealing Art School, studying graphic design before joining the group. Having played a huge role in cementing British music in history Queen are one of the most successful bands to date, evolving into a brand over the years. It was in fact Freddie that designed the Queen’s crest, an image that is still used on merchandise around the world.
