5 APP DESIGN SHIFTS OF 2015

MOBO Media

Although 2015 is only in its infancy we are already seeing new apps showcasing unique features that we did not see in 2014, with the new year set to have a whole new experience when working apps.

With 88% of the youth population now owning a smartphone apps have become a prominent feature that is cemented in the everyday life of the mobile user.

Being such a powerful online tool big brands are expected to release a series of updates throughout the year, ensuring all of their applications are inline with modern design.

Design has a huge bearing on the success of both websites and apps, dictating whether or not they are relatable and engaging. Below are the top five trends we are set to see in 2015 app creation.

Personality

You may have noticed that over the course of the past few years everything has become a little more playful in marketing, especially with mobile apps. Where we used to respond to aggressive calls for action delivered by intellectually challenge content we now like a giggle.

With many bloggers and marketing critics claiming Innocent Drinks to be the catalyst of this shift in style all we know is that we love this unconventional tone.

With websites sayings things like ‘give us a tinkle’ rather than ‘contact us’ or ‘make an enquiry’ it seems that the app has followed suit, now there to deliver suggests with personality rather than intimidating demands.

Menus

Menus are always a much-hated part of design, infamously making things look messy. With the best web designers finding ways to direct users in a clean, visually pleasing fashion some just get it very wrong.

New apps will be hiding their menus, and although providing an option to have it appear apps will look clean. This is simply another example of designers refusing to work inline with established interface design.

Big Screens

When the first mobile came out it was rather large, being the product of many comedy sketches such as Trigger Happy TV. Although hilarious phones then began to shrink, as technology became more streamlined so did the components needed to build a physical phone.

It is worth noting that back in the 70’s we used mobiles simply to call, then we became to text and now we can basically do everything on our mobiles. From shopping for our groceries to buying insurance and ordering a taxi, there is just a short list of things a human can do that a smartphone cannot.

For this reason phones are getting bigger again, having to deliver a lot more than simply the occasional phone call. Market intelligence researcher IDC thinks sales of phones with screens taller than 5 inches will boom by 209% this year.

However, with such big screens we lose the ability to operate our phones with the one hand, having to go back to what industry experts call ‘cradling’. This means holding the phone with one hand and operating it with the other.

What does this mean for app designers? Designers are therefore having to take a more universal approach to design, working in a very similar way to responsive web design.

Depth

The last couple of years designers have been obsession with flat design, with minimalism being a key feature across the web.

Although we will continue to see flat design we will also experience slight forms of skeuomorphism.

This means that although images will still look flat there will be layers to the images we see, giving the illusion of a physical presence. This type of depth can be achieved by using both transparency and layers.

Connectivity

Connectivity will play a big part in app design in 2015 with apps recognising where we are, even when we are sat indoors. This is from the help of technologies that can capture data with Apple’s iBeacon playing a part in this new trend.

Let us know what you think, do you favour these new app focuses?
