WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PR AND MARKETING?

MOBO Media

Where many believe that PR comes under the umbrella of ‘Marketing’ it is important that as a business you can make clear distinctions between said industries, ensuring that your communication strategies have a clear, measurable objective.

Understanding that not everyone knows the difference between PR and marketing we thought we would clear this up.

The bottom line

Marketing works to sell a company’s product or service where PR is more about building relationships and sculpting the personality of a brand. Where both are vital for any flourishing business they both deserve bespoke attention, and although there may be crossovers PR and marketing campaigns must be planned, executed and measured separately.

Social media and its contribution to confusion

Social media has arguably blurred the boundaries between PR and marketing, a relatively new platform that allows businesses to both encourage sales and customer relationships.

Giving brands the space to prevail their personality as well as advertise what they do companies like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram celebrate both PR and marketing methods through posts and images.

If you are struggling with defining your PR and marketing style then just remember that although PR and marketing require different functions they work together beautifully and although social media has stuck the boot in traditional communications it should be used to further endorse what your marketing and PR teams and conjuring up.
