The internet communication service Skype hit a new high this week when it recorded 25 million concurrent users communicating via Skype services at the same time.
Skype has been going from strength to strength in 2010 with the help of a number of high profile partnerships with other online providers, and also due to improvements made to their communication services.
Skype users can sign-up to the provider’s free service which allows free video and voice calls, however Skype has also developed a mobile service in recent months which is showing signs of healthy growth.
According to bosses at Skype, services on Monday when the 25 million concurrent users were recorded were not affected at all by the volume of people utilising the online communication services as the software has been especially designed to cope with large volumes of users interacting at the same time.
Recent statistics show that Skype currently boasts 560 million registered users around the world, however only a small fraction of these are paying users.
Improvements have been made to Skype’s video service in the last 12 months, plus Skype have also struck up a partnership with Facebook, both of which are likely to have contributed to the recent surge in people using the service. A 40% increase in the number of Skype-to-Skype calls was also recorded in the first half of 2010 providing further evidence that Skype’s star is rising.
